Tun Sir Henry Lee Hau Shik (1900–1988) was one of the most influential yet often underappreciated figures in the making of modern Malaysia. Best remembered today through Jalan Tun H.S. Lee in Kuala Lumpur, his contributions extended far beyond business success or political office. From his early involvement in the tin mining industry to his emergence as a key political leader during the turbulent decades leading to independence, H.S. Lee played a critical role in shaping the foundations of the Malayan nation-state. This lecture traces H.S. Lee’s remarkable journey from entrepreneur to statesman, situating his life within the wider transformations of colonial Malaya, the Japanese Occupation, the Emergency, and the road to Merdeka. It explores how his experience in commerce and community leadership enabled him to become an important intermediary between the British colonial administration, the Chinese community, and emerging nationalist politics. As a founding leader of the MCA and later Malaya’s first Finance Minister, H.S. Lee contributed significantly to inter-ethnic cooperation, economic institution-building, and the political compromises that underpinned independence in 1957. Drawing from recent research and the newly published book In Service of a Nation: The Life and Legacy of Tun Sir Henry Lee Hau Shik, this talk also reflects on why H.S. Lee’s legacy matters today. Beyond the story of an individual, the lecture offers a broader perspective on the role of business elites, community leadership, and moderation in the making of modern Malaysia.
