Abstract

The name of Malaysia’s capital, ‘Kuala Lumpur,’ is commonly translated as ‘muddy confluence,’ here referring to the junction of the Klang and Gombak Rivers. However, alternative explanations of this name’s origins have long been proposed. Based on a study of Malay toponymic traditions, close readings of historical records and maps, and a topographical analysis of local rivers and streams, there is evidence that the city’s name derives from a lost ‘Sungai Lumpur’ (Mud River). A stream by that name is mentioned in several historical records, including an 1824 account by John Anderson, a 1872 sketch map, and recollections of the Selangor Civil War (1867–74). However, neither colonial nor modern maps refer to any local stream as ‘Sungai Lumpur.’ Our analysis suggests that this is because this stream was renamed by the British as the ‘Treacher Valley Stream’, which runs through the heart of the city, although it is now channelised and partly covered over. Nevertheless, we propose that resurrecting the Sungai Lumpur allows us to reframe Kuala Lumpur’s history by highlighting its marginalised indigenous and ecological roots, while offering opportunities to reconnect the modern city with this lost riparian heritage.
